About Maciek
Maciej Lewenstein is a theoretical physicist. But this statement is oversimplified. If one thing should characterize his research and interest it would be the diversity. He has been working on and contributing successfully to very different branches of physics and other sciences. He is considered as one of the leading experts in quantum optics, his achievements include formulation of spectacular theory of high harmonic generation, quantum optics of dielectric media, cold atom physics, etc. Yet a significant part of his work deals with purely mathematical questions related to the foundations of physics, such as the nature of correlations in quantum systems, models of human cognition and human voting behaviour. Recently his interests mainly focus on quantum many body physics of ultracold matter, quantum information, quantum simulators, quantum open systems, statistical physics, Brownian motion, quantum optics, ultra-cold gases, and atto-physics. In all of his research theoretical physics and its methods set the methodology and standards. Not to be forgotten is his monumental contribution in a form of polish jazz encyclopedia.
He is one of the few scientist who have obtained two ERC Advanced Grants in a row. He has been extremely active in getting support from Spanish and EU Grants, and other funding agencies in Europe and USA. He has been awarded Humboldt Research Prize in 2007, Joachim Hertz Foundation Prize of University of Hamburg in 2010, Prize of the Polish Foundation for Science in 2011, Johannes Gutenberg Prize of University of Mainz in 2013, and EPS Quantum Optics and Electronic Division Prize for Fundamental Research in 2013. He is a member of the European Academy of Science since 2012.
